Frequently Asked Questions
Bringing Phones to School
Can pupils still bring their phones to school?
Yes. Pupils may bring their phones for use before and after school, particularly for travel. However, we encourage families to consider whether bringing a phone is necessary, especially for younger pupils.
All pupils may keep their phones on their possession between lessons and during break and lunchtime; however, they must store them in classroom phone boxes during lessons. Phones must remain out of sight when moving between classes.
Use During the School Day
Can pupils use their phones at break or lunchtime?
All pupils may use phones responsibly in designated social areas (e.g., canteen) or corridors during lunchtime or break time.
Do pupils need to store phones in lockers?
No. Lockers are not available for phone storage. Pupils may keep phones in their bags, but they must remain out of sight and unused unless permitted.
Communication and Emergencies
How can I contact my child during the school day?
All communication must go through the school office. Our admin team will promptly relay messages to and from pupils. This ensures consistency and avoids disruption to learning.
Policy Enforcement and Consequences
What happens if a pupil uses their phone when not permitted?
If a pupil is found using their phone inappropriately:
- They will be asked to hand it over to a member of staff.
- The phone will be placed in a padded envelope, sealed and signed by the pupil.
- It can be collected from the school office at 3:35pm.
Repeated misuse will result in staged sanctions, as outlined in the full policy.
Is the phone insured if it is confiscated?
No. Phones always remain the responsibility of the pupil. While we take care to store devices securely, they are not covered by school insurance.
Exceptions and Support
Are there any exceptions to the policy?
Yes. Pupils with medical or wellbeing needs may be granted exceptions. These must be agreed in advance with school staff and are outlined in the full policy.
Will staff be present in the community during lunch?
Staff supervision in the community remains consistent with current practice. While staff may be present at times, this is not a formal part of the mobile device policy.
Policy Breaches and Consequences
What happens if a pupil refuses to follow the mobile device policy or misuses their phone?
We operate a scaled and supportive approach to managing breaches of the mobile device policy. Our aim is to uphold our school values of Pride, Respect, and Ambition while ensuring fairness and consistency.
Initial Breach:
- The pupil will be asked to hand over their device.
- It will be stored securely in a padded envelope and returned at the end of the day.
- A reminder of expectations will be given.
Repeated or Escalated Misuse:
- In agreement with home, a period of time will be allocated as confiscation of the device. For example, their mobile device may be left at home or handed in to a member of their House Team for the duration of each day of the confiscation.
- Parents/carers will be contacted to discuss the issue.
- A meeting may be arranged to agree on next steps and support strategies.
Persistent Refusal or Serious Misuse:
- The pupil may be required to leave their device at home for a fixed period.
- Additional sanctions may be applied in line with the school’s Relationship for Respect policy.
- In serious cases, such as refusal to comply or inappropriate use (e.g., filming, harassment), the matter may be escalated to senior staff and safeguarding procedures.
We are committed to working with families to support pupils in making positive choices and using technology responsibly. Our approach is designed to be firm but fair, with a focus on learning and restoration.
