Celebrating Success

Perth Grammar School is proud of the success of the school and its individuals. Here are a selection of our most recent successes: 


Congratulations to Eildh Davies 2LD2, Kaitlyn Doig 3EN2, Abbie Ferguson 4LD1 who have been selected by the Scottish Football Association to take part in the Women's Under 15 training camp from the 6th to 8th September.




Congratulations to Emma Rutherford 5LD1 who won the 300m and was 2nd in the 200m at the Scottish Schools last Friday 9th June 2017



Congratulations to Jodie McKenzie 4LD3 who won Gold and Silver in the 11-14 age group at the Scottish Kata Championships on 8th April 2017.





Daryl Marshall 2EN2 and Shaun Holden 2EN1 who both play for Letham Community Sport, represented Scotland in an U15 Futsal international friendly vs Australia on Friday 30th April and performed extremely well. The Australian Futsal Association brought 2 teams across to face our squad and Scotland won the first game 3-1 and the second 6-1. 

Both Daryl and Shaun have played for the 2003 teams in football for a number of years and have more recently got involved in our Futsal section. They have really impressed the coaches and as such were put forward for Scotland.


Congratulations to S6 pupil Naomi Moodie whose poem 'For What it's Worth' was Highly Commended in the Perthshire Writers Schools Poetry Competition.







Congratulations to Ailsa Gourlay 4LD2 who will represent Scotland this year in the Pan-Celtic races. The Pan-Celtic is the home nations competition with races in Scotland, England and Wales throughout the year. She will race in both her Canoe (C1) and Kayak (K1).

Congratulations to Class 2LD2 who, assisted by their teacher Miss Dickinson, organised a collection of items from pupils and staff to make up shoeboxes for the Shoebox Appeal project. They managed to donate 24 boxes in total and had lots of extra goodies that were able to help fill further boxes at the collection site. 





Huge congratulations to Michael Gartside 6EN2 (on the right of the picture) who is our first S6 pupil this year to complete the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Michael has completed the award in just 15 months which is impressive and clearly  a reflection of his organisational skills! For Gold DofE, Michael completed the following: 

12 months volunteering in Red Cross Charity shop; 6 months of weekly Badminton training; 6 months of playing his violin and working towards Grade 6; Completing a residential week away from home learning to sail; Completing a 3 day training expedition and then completing 4 days of canoeing down the Great Glen (Fort William) last August.

Liam Mathieson, 3AD2 represented Scotland in the Liverpool Quadrangular International Chess Tournament on the 3rd and 4th of December.  He won two games and drew one game against the best of junior chess players in England and Wales.  It was a ten player team event and Scotland beat north England 7-3 in first round then had a fantastic  10-0 victory against the Midlands.  Scotland eventually won 6.5 to 3.5 giving them the title for the first time in twelve years.

It has been a successful year for Liam who also won the Junior Cup at the Perth Congress and best under 16 player at the Dundee Congress. Well done!


Congratulations to S1 pupil Neil Elliot who passed his first Karate grading in the disability category at JKS Perth on 14th November. He is now a white/orange belt.





Jay Doherty 3EN2 has had a very successful year in swimming, winning many medals throughout the year at different galas. On Friday 25th November 2016 he won an impressive amount of trophies including one for Senior Boys Club Champion 2016.

He also heard on Friday that he passed his Grade 3 Electric Guitar Exam.

Congratulations to Jay on these achievements.



This weekend 5th & 6th November 2016, Jay Doherty 3EN2 achieved the most medals in one sitting at the Midland Graded Meet held at Dundee Olympia:-

200m Back - Bronze, 400m IM - Silver, 100m Butterfly - Gold, 200m Butterfly - Gold, 200m Free - Silver, 200m IM - Speeding Ticket (although he won, he was too fast!), 100m Back - Gold, 200m Breast - Bronze.

Well done to Jay for this impressive achievement!


Perth Kinnoull Rotary Young Artist Competition 2016 - Katherine Morse 3LD2 (pictured left with her teacher Mrs McIver) has won the S1-S3 section and Catriona Roberts 3LD3 is runner up. Their awards were presented at the  PAA Annual Exhibition Opening night on 3rd November in Perth Museum & Art Gallery. The paintings will be displayed during the exhibition which runs from 4th November to 3rd December and 8th December to 7th January.





Cairn O'Mohr Winery Visit September 2016

On 21st September 2016 the HE department took Senior HFT pupils to cairn O’Mohr Winery to learn more about sustainability and food product development  first hand from a successful local food business.  




On Monday 26th September 2016 some of our S6 pupils and staff (under 30s)  donated saliva samples for the Anthony Nolan Trust/ Fire Service. They donated their saliva to go on the stem cell / bone marrow register to save lives of patients with blood cancers and disorders. We are the first school in Perth, Tayside, North to do this!!

Congratulations to Jay Doherty 3EN2 who competed in the SASA Midlands District Sprints Championship on Sunday 4th September in Dundee. He took part in 6 races, achieved PB's in most and managed to get through to the finals for 50m Fly, 50m Free and 50m Breast. The results of the finals were:

50m Fly - 1st (Gold!), 50m Free - 4th (missed bronze by 300th of sec!), 50m Breast - 4th (missed bronze by 200th of sec!) 

He was lucky enough to have his gold medal presented to him by Stephen Milne, the British Olympic swimmer who won silver in the 4 x 200m Freestyle Relay at Rio.  



Congratulations to Ailsa Gourlay (4LD2), who won the trophy for first Junior 15 in canoe and got medals for runner up in kayak and C2 at the Scottish School Slalom Championships.





Congratulations to S6 pupil and School Captain for 2016/17, Ewan Rawcliffe who has been presented with a grant of £1000 from the Franco-Scottish Society which will allow him to spend time in France studying and speaking French. He had to submit a 2000 word essay in French explaining why he should be chosen and will have to report in French to the branch members following his visit.



School Satire Ambassador - Ruth Adam (6AD1) is our School's Saltire Ambassador and along with duties in school such as promoting and managing the awards she will also sit on a panel of other ambassadors from around Perth to decide on who should gain a summit award as well as helping to organise Saltire events. 


Congratulations to Jay Doherty 2EN2 who achieved 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze at the Midland District Distance Meet held on 6th, 7th, 8th May at Dundee Olympia Swimming Pool.





Congratulations to S5 pupil Michael Robertson who has been selected to be the new Lord-Lieutenant Cadet for Perthshire for the next year. He has also passed his 4* cadre coming top student on his course and received a trophy while attending cadet camp at Barrybuddon during the Easter holidays.  


YPI winners 2016

The first ever Youth & Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) final took place in the theatre on Tuesday 26th April, it was a great success with one team winning £3000 funding for their chosen charity.

The winning group were Sioned Davies, Cayla McLeod, Abbie Ferguson and Anna McCallum all in S2. Their chosen charity is Churches Action for The Homeless (CATH). CATH is a fantastic charity who support homeless people in Perth and I am sure they will be delighted to receive £3000 extra funding this year



Junior ChoirPerth Grammar School junior choir represented the school in the S1-3 category in the Perform in Perth Festival competition. They  were awarded a trophy and a first class certificate.






Jodie McKenzie of 2LD3 won a competition run by Tayside Contracts and Radio Tay with her 'selfie' taken in the school dining hall (Jodie is at far left of picture).  Her prize is a go-karting session with her friends!




Jay Doherty 2EN2 is pictured with the trophies he was awarded at this year's Blairgowrie Dolphins Annual Presentation on Friday 27th November 2015.  This year, he is the Boys Age 12-13 Club Champion. 




Jodie McKenzie 2LD3 competed at the Scottish Karate Championships on Saturday 28th November and did really well. She is now the Scottish Karate Champion!  This was for individual Kata 11-14. She also won gold for her Jiyu Ippon Kumie in the 11-14 category and bronze in Kumite!



Kyle BaillieS1 pupil Kyle Baillie was a commended winner of the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust competition with this picture. He attended a ceremony at the A K Bell Library on 18th November where he collected his certificate and prizes. It was an excellent achievement. Well done!



Here’s a photo of PGS pupils Dean Malcolm, Connor Nicol and Peter-Godfrey Mackay who won a Bronze medal last week at a national football tournament in Glasgow playing for Letham Lions.



  Congratulations to Amy Simpson 1EN1 - 3rd place at kids’ Kumite Competition at Meadowbank (karate).
